Yuri was born on 17 April 1928, in the village of George, Chukhlomsky district, the Kostroma region, Russian Federation. From 1945 until 1947 he was a photographer in the Mosfilm Studio.

In 1947 Yuri Nikolaevich applied to the 2nd Moscow State Medical Institute named after I.V. Stalin (later 2nd Moscow State Medical Institute named after N.I. Pirogov). After graduation in 1953 he continued his studies in the residency by the Depertment of ear, nose and throat illnesses in the 2nd Moscow State Medical Institute named after N.I. Pirogov and simultaneously was a senior laboratory assistant, junior research fellow in the USSR Health Ministry Institute of Biophysics. In 1959 he defended his Candidate's Dissertation «The effect of strontium-90 on the neurovascular elements of the bone».
After graduation from the university he was a senior laboratory assistant, junior research fellow in the USSR Health Ministry Institute of Biophysics. From May 1960 until November 1963 he was a senior research officer and the Head of the «Pathomorphology» Laboratory of the AMS USSR General and Communal Hygiene after A.N. Sysina Institute. From 1963 until now worked in USSR Academy of Medical Sciences Research Institute of Experimental and Clinical Oncology (subsequently – in USSR Academy of Medical Sciences All-Union Cancer Research Center, now – in Russian Cancer Research Center named after N.N. Blokhin RAMS). At first as a senior research officer in the Department of Human Tumors Pathological Anatomy. From 1974 until 1978 he acted as the Deputy Director of the Center for Research Work, in 1978 he headed the Laboratory of Locomotor System Tumors Pathologic Anatomy. From 1981 until 1985 Yuri Nikolaevich was a Director of the Сarcinogenesis Research Institute of AMS USSR All-Union Cancer Research Center and the Deputy Director Center of Science, from 1985 until 1993 was a head of the Pathological Anatomy of Human Tumors Department and since 1963 he has been a Chief Scientist of this department.
During the period from 1953 to 1960 Yuri Nikolaevich conducted a series of works in the sphere of radiobiology and radiation pathology.
Since 1963 he has been studying the issues of diagnostics, pathogenesis and evaluation of the effectiveness of benign and malignant tumors treatment and tumor-like processes in the bone skeleton. The material of patients’ tumors since 1951 has been studied. In 1972 there was the defence of PhD dissertation «Tumors of bones (morphology and pathogenesis issues)». For a long period of time he worked in the editorial staff of Great Medical Encyclopedia as the academic secretary of the editorial departments «Oncology» and «Pathological Anatomy», he is the author of a number of articles in the 3rd edition of the GME.
He published more than 200 scientific works in domestic and foreign publications on topics, related to diagnosis and evaluation of the effectiveness of malignant tumors treatment of humans and animals. He is the co-author of a number of manuals on diagnosis of human tumors.
He was constantly working as a member of various scientific councils, participated in international projects (WHO, IARC, CMEA) on the development of diagnostics and nomenclature of tumors of various localizations.
In 1984 he was elected as a corresponding member of the USSR Medical Sciences Academy, and in 1991 he became a full member of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences. He was constantly working as a member of various scientific councils, participated in international projects (WHO, IARC, CMEA) on the development of diagnostics and nomenclature of tumors of various localizations. He was a member of the editorial boards of the journals «The American Surgery Pathology», «Human Pathology», «Pathology Archive» and others.
He is married, and has two sons.
