Eduard Alexandrovich Stepanov is a famous Russian professor, doctor of medicine who devoted his career to the studying of thoracic surgery. Under his leadership and direct involvement, a number of new methods of treating congenital and acquired lung and esophageal diseases in children have been developed. He made a great contribution to the development of surgical tactics in acute purulent lung diseases.

Education

In 1953 Stepanov graduated from the 2nd Moscow State Medical Institute named after N.I. Pirogov, in 1955 graduated from clinical residency at the Department of Pediatric Surgery of the institute.

Career

From 1955 until 1961 Stepanov worked in the Children's City Clinical Hospital №13 named after N.F. Filatova surgeon, head of the thoracic surgery departement. From 1961 until 1966 he was an assistant, from 1966 until 1972 he was an associate professor of the pediatric surgery department in the 2nd Moscow State Medical Institute named after N.I. Pirogov. Since 1972 Eduard Aleksandrovich has been a professor at the Surgical Diseases of Childhood Department with courses of endoscopic surgery in pediatrics and pediatric urology-andrology at the doctors’ advanced training faculty in the 2nd Moscow State Medical Institute named after N.I. Pirogov. From 1982 until 1992 he was a chief freelance child surgeon of the USSR Ministry of Health.

Achievements

  • He developed a complex of studies on the diagnosis and surgical treatment of tumors of the thoracic cavity among children. Candidate (1963) and doctoral (1972) dissertations are defended on this issue.

    For a series of works on the diagnosis and surgical treatment of staphylococcal lungs destruction among children, in 1977 Professor E.A. Stepanov as well as Academician of the USSR Medical Sciences Academy Y.F. Isakov and Professor V.I. Geraskin was awarded the Academic Prize named after S.I. Spasokukotsky of AMS of the USSR. In 1985 for the development and introduction into clinical practice of new methods of conducting operations involving the use of magneto-mechanical systems for diseases of the gastrointestinal tract and deformations of the thorax, Professor E.A. Stepanov as a member of the staff in the Pediatric Surgery Department of the 2nd MIIGMI named after N.I. Pirogov and engineers of design office "Spetsmagnit" were awarded the State Prize of the USSR.

    For the development and introduction of reconstructive and plastic surgery of the esophagus among children into the practice of public health, in 2000 he and his students were awarded the Russian Federation Government Prize.

    In 1996, for the introduction and application of new technologies in pediatric surgery, E.A. Stepanov was awarded the Academic Prize named after S.D. Ternovskii RAMS. With the emergence of modern endoscopic equipment in the late 1980s, Professor E.A. Stepanov began to apply endoscopic methods of diagnosis and treatment in children's abdominal and later - thoracic surgery. In 1999 for the development and implementation of minimally invasive (endoscopic) surgery among children, he became a laureate of the Moscow Government Prize.

Stepanov is a Deputy Chairman of the Russian Association of Pediatric Surgeons Presidium (1992), Chairman of the Moscow Board and Moscow Region Children's Surgeons Section of the Moscow Society of Surgeons (1994), Board Member of the Moscow Society of Surgeons (1996).
