In 1948, Lev Durnov enrolled in the 3rd Moscow Medical Institute, which in 1949 was transferred to Ryazan. In 1950, Lev returned to the capital and in 1956 graduated from the 2nd Moscow Medical Institute (MOLMI) named after N. Pirogov. In 1958 he entered the postgraduate course in pediatrics of the 2nd MOLMI.
After graduation, Lev Abramovich Durnov worked in a rural district hospital in the village of Ulyanovo, Kaluga region (1956-1959). Then he worked in the 1st Children's Clinical Hospital in Moscow (Morozovskaya) - at first as an intern, and in 1962 as head of the surgical department. In 1962 Lev Abramovich defended his thesis on "Treatment of microspherocytic anemia in children". In January 1962, he organized and headed the first in the USSR children's oncology department, which was located on the basis of the Morozov hospital. In 1965, the department entered the Institute of Experimental and Clinical Oncology (now - the All-Russian Cancer Research Center named after N. Blokhin RAMS). He was invited to the post of head of the department N. Blokhin. In 1966 Lev Abramovich Durnov defended his doctoral thesis on "Treatment of Wilms tumor in children," in 1968 received the title of professor. In 1990, on the basis of the department, the Institute of Pediatric Oncology of the Russian Cancer Research Center was organized, which was headed by L. Durnov, who is currently in this position. In 1992 Lev Abramovich organized and headed the Department of Pediatric Oncology at the Russian Medical Academy of Postgraduate Education (RAMPE).
Lev Abramovich made a huge contribution to the development of oncology in the Russian Federation, was engaged in research and surgery. Under his guidance, a lot of good oncologists were trained, who later succeeded not only in Russia, but also in other CIS countries.
Lev Abramovich is engaged in literary activity. He published two books on oncology, wrote 31 monographs, became the author of more than 500 scientific papers, and regularly published his popular science publications in periodicals.
Lev Abramovich Durnov is a member of the editorial boards of several medical journals (Vestnik RAMS, Children's Surgery, Together Against Cancer, etc.). In 1994 he became a corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences, and in 1998 - a full member.
Lev Abramovich is an academician of the Academy of International Information (1995), the Yerevan Academy of Surgery (1998), chairman of the problem committee on pediatric oncology at the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences (1970), president of the Children's Anti-Cancer Fund (1985), chairman of the CMEA problem commission for pediatric oncology (1970-1987). ), a member of the Committee on Cancer in Children with WHO (1971-1973), a member of the Board of the All-Union Children's Fund (1987-1991).
Durnova Basia Aronovna worked as a doctor-therapist and very much succeeded in this. She entered the medical institute, being already an adult woman - she was 35 years old, but this did not stop her from coping well with her work and devoting herself to the study of medicine. Her example inspired young Durnov, it was thanks to her that Lev became a doctor.
