In 1957 Yuri studied at Leningrad Polytechnic Institute at the radiophysical faculty.
Worked as an engineer at the Voronezh Radio Plant (1957-1966). Head of the Laboratory of the Voronezh State University (1966-1992), Voronezh State Pedagogical University (1992-1996). Teacher at the Voronezh Music College (1974-2001) and the Rostov School of Arts (1974-1994). The founder and chairman (1966-1990, with breaks) of the Voronezh city jazz club, the organizer of jazz festivals in Voronezh (1969-1971). In 1986-1990 he was a member of the Central Council of the Russian Jazz Federation and a member of the editorial board of the Jazz magazine, in which fragments from Vemenich's memoirs Each of Us (written in 1978) were published.
Author of the book ... And all this jazz (Voronezh, 2002, St. Petersburg, 2004), compiler of the best anthology of American cinema The Best of Hollywood (Moscow, 1996). Moscow firm Melody has produced several records in the series The Anthology of Soviet Jazz (late 1980s - early 1990s) with the participation of Vermenich. He translated 30 books on jazz from the English language (1964-1990).
