He has studied linguistics, German and Iranian languages at the Free University of Berlin, and wrote his doctoral thesis on Indo-Iranian language studies.

Since 1982, he has been teaching at the universities of Berlin, Bremen and Hamburg. He has been the president of the Kurdish chapter of the literary organization Poets, Playwrights, Editors, Essayists and Novelists association since 1998.
