Morinaga had already supported Yoritomo while he lived in exile in Izu province. After the wars, he became a monk and took the name Rensai. He was commonly called Tokuro. While Shogun Yoritomo Minamoto was still in exile in Izu Province (Shizuoka Prefecture), he gave secret assistance to the future Shogun. When Yoritomo raised his army in 1180, it was Morinaga who conveyed his appeal to warriors in the Kanto District. With his eloquence, he succeeded in enlisting many warriors into Yoritomo's camp. Yoritomo's forces, however, were defeated in the battle of Ishibashiyama and ran to Awa (Chiba Prefecture). Morinaga, followed Yoritomo there. When Yoritomo finally founded his Shogunate in Kamakura. He rewarded Morinaga with many favors for his past services.
