Akaboshi Kenzo was born in 1844 in Fukuoka.
He went to Germany in 1866 tor study at the order of his clan.
He participated in the Franco-Prussian War (1870-1871) in the capacity of a German army surgeon and made surgical research in performing dissections on the bodies of soldiers killed in the war. Upon return to Japan in 1873, he was appointed physician attached to the Imperial Court and then professor at Tokyo University. He became director of the Viiyati Prefectural Hospital in Sendai and its attached school in 1879. After serving as director of the Kurume Hospital in his native prefecture, he went back to Sendai and practiced medicine.
