Background
Akitsura Tachibana was born in 1516 in Oita, Japan. He was the son of Chikaie Bekki and belonging to a branch of Lord Otomo's family of Bungo (Oita Prefecture).

Career
Akitsura Tachibana distinguished himself when he repressed the revolt of Chikamoto Sano who sided with Ouchi (1526). Later he subdued the Kikuchi family in Higo (Kumamoto Prefecture), and took to himself the title of Lord of Hoki in 1535. Later he subdued the lords of northern Kyushu in 1557.
He became a priest under the name of Rimpakuken Dosetsu in 1562. At that time Yoshiaki Otomo began living a life of dissipation and neglected affairs of the clan so Akitsura returned to secular life and did much to restore law and order in the district.
He succeeded to the estate of his father and became castellan of Tachibana Castle and ruled northern Kyushu in 1571. His power began to decline after he was defeated by the Shimazu and otomo clan at Mimigawa (Miyazaki Prefecture) in 1578. Soon after he had to retreat to Mount Kora under the pressure of Tanezane Akizuki, where he fell sick and died.
