In 1977 Alexander Gavrilenko defended his candidate thesis on subject: "Surgical service of vasorenal hypertension, which is caused by fibromuscular dysplasia of the renal arteries" and in 1990 he defended his doctorate thesis on subject: "Surgical service of chronical abdominal angina". In 1995 A.V. Gavrilenko was awarded a rank of professor.
Alexander Gavrilenko has the USA license. Alexander Gavrilenko has a patent for an invention ("A surgical clamp in cases of excision of cardiac aneurysm without a heart-lung bypass machine and an indicator of local lie of aneurysm for its usage"). Alexander Gavrilenko was among the first in Russian and in the Commonwealth of Independent States who implemented such surgical services as arterialization of venous bloodstream of foot and lower leg in patients with critical ischemia, femoropecia autovenous shunting by the procedure "in situ" using angioscopy.
Alexander Gavrilenko is a chairperson of a task group of "Emergency vascular surgery", a member of inner academic board of the Russian Scientific Center of Surgery of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences, an academic secretary of the thesis board of the Russian Scientific Center of Surgery of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences (1997). Alexander Gavrilenko is a representative from Russia and a member of editorial board of the International European Medical journal "European journal of vascular and endovascular surgery".
