From 1965 to 1971 he studied at high school №347 of Pervomaisky district in Moscow, after graduation from the 6th grade he went to boarding sports school.
In 1967 - 1971 he practiced gymnastics in a children's and youth sports school.
In 1975 he graduated from boarding sports school №9 in Moscow.
In 1981 he graduated from the Moscow Aviation Institute (MAI), «Aircraft» faculty, with a specialization in «Mechanical Equipment of Aircraft», a mechanical engineer.
In 1985 he graduated from English Department of the State Central Courses of correspondence courses in foreign languages.
In 1987 he finished the English language course and graduated from the Institute for Advanced Studies for managers and specialists.
Since April 1981 he worked as an engineer of the department №607 in MAI. Since November 14, 1984 he worked as an engineer (since January 1, 1989 - engineer of the 2nd category) of the 292nd department of the Head Design Bureau of the RSC «Energy». Participated in crews' training, in the development of training programs for operators on dynamic stands and cosmonauts for the extravehicular activitiy (EVA). Participated in the development of training programs for operators on the product 27KS (OC «Mir»).
May 13, 1992 – according to the order of the State Committee of Defense Industry (SCNP) №280 was enlisted in the cosmonaut corps as a cosmonaut-tester candidate of the 291st department. On June 2, 1992, this order was duplicated by the order on the «Energy» research and production association. Cosmonaut of the «Energy» research and production association, 11th recruitment.
In 1989 he was sent for medical examination to the Institute of Biomedical Problems (IBMP) and on September 14, 1989 he was admitted by the Main Medical Board (MMB) to special training.
On March 3, 1992 according to the decision of the State Interdepartmental Commission recommended for enrollment in the cosmonaut corps of the «Energy» research and production association. On May 13, 1992 according to the order of the State Committee of Defense Industry (SCNP) №280 he was enlisted in the cosmonaut corps as a cosmonaut-tester candidate of the 291st department. On June 2, 1992 this order was duplicated by the order on the «Energy» research and production association.
From October 1, 1992 to February,1994 was getting general space training at the CTC named after Y.A. Gagarin. Having passed all the exams and tests successfly, on February 25, 1994 according to the decision of the Interdepartmental Qualification Commitee he was qualified as cosmonaut-tester. On June 16, 1994 he was appointed to the post of cosmonaut-tester in the 291th department.
On April 1, 1994 he was appointed to the post of a flight engineer of the second crew under the program EO-21. From April 18, 1995 to January 31, 1996 he was receiving direct training for the flight along with V. Tsibliev, and in June, 1995 J. Blaha (USA) joined them. During the start of the SC «Soyuz TM-23» on February 21, 1996 he was the backup engineer of the ship.
From March 25, 1996 to January, 1997 he was trained for the flight under the program EO-23 as a flight engineer of the first crew along with V. Tsibliev. In April, 1996 the European astronaut R. Ewald (Germany) joined the preparation, and J. Linenger (USA) joined them in August, 1996.
In accordance with the decisions of the Main Medical Board of March 6, 2007 and the Main Interdepartmental Commission of November 15, 2007, by the order of the head of Roskosmos, on November 22, 2007 he was dismissed from the position of the 3rd class cosmonaut-tester.
