Alexander Grigorievich Makarevsky (Theodosius) was born in 1822 in Chernihivs'ka Oblast', Ukraine.
Theodosius received his initial religious and moral education at home, in 1845 he graduated from the Chernihiv Theological Seminary, and in 1849 from the Kyiv Theological Academy. Released on the first level, which gave the right to become a master in two years.
On January 31, 1850, Theodosius was sent to the Smolensk Theological Seminary as a teacher of civil history, scripture, and Greek. From February 10, 1851, to July 29, 1853, he was a member of the Committee for the Description of the Smolensk Diocese. On March 28, 1853, Theodosius was appointed rector of the Vyazemsky district and parish theological schools. At this time he married and on May 28, 1853, became a priest of the Vyazma Trinity Cathedral.
On March 29, 1862, Hieromonk Theodosius has transferred to the Saint Petersburg Theological Academy as an inspector and professor of theology, a month later he was archimandrite, rector of one of the third-class monasteries.
A year and a half later, Archimandrite Theodosius was transferred to Voronezh and on August 28, 1863, he was appointed rector of the theological seminary, professor of theology, as well as rector of the Alekseevsky Akatov Monastery, member of the spiritual consistory, chairman of the committee for drafting an akathist, Saint Tikhon, dean of the Voronezh diocese monasteries.
March 26, 1866, Theodosius was awarded the Order of St. Anne of the II degree. On December 10, 1866, by the decision of the Holy Synod, Archimandrite Theodosius was appointed the first editor of the newly created "Voronezh Eparchial Vedomosti". He repeatedly posted here his sermons and articles.
