In 1949 Alexander Ilyich graduated from the Vasyl Stefanyk Precarpathian National University in major Teaching and then in 1951 from the Faculty of Philology of Voronezh State Institute of Arts.
Alexander Ilyich Kretov was a lecturer of the Voronezh State Pedagogical Institute from 1955 till 1962, then he became an Associate Professor of the Department of Russian Literature, then - separated from it the Department of Theory of Literature and Folklore of the Voronezh State University. Alexander Ilyich Kretov is the author of many works, including the textbook "Russian Oral Folk Art".
