He graduated from the Faculty of Musical Theatres Directors of the Lunacharsky State Institute for Theatre Arts (1976, the course of Professor I.M. Tumanov, Professor O.M. Moralev).
Alexander Nikolaevich Zykov was a director of the Gorky Opera and Ballet Theater (1975-1985), chief director (1985-2006), artistic director (since 2008) of the Voronezh Opera and Ballet Theater, chief director of the Voronezh Philharmonic (2006-2008).
He staged performances in the theaters of St. Petersburg, Irkutsk, Arzamas, the cities of Liberec and Ostrava (Czech Republic). Major performances: "Mermaid" Alexander Dargomyzhsky, "Eugene Onegin", "The Queen of Spades", "Iolanta" Pyotr Tchaikovsky, "Mowgli" Shirvani Chalaev, "Marriage of Figaro" Wolfgang Mozart, "Troubadour" Giuseppe Verdi, "Madam Butterfly", "Tosca" by Giacomo Puccini, "Bluebeard Knight" by Jacques Offenbach, "The Bat", "The Gypsy Baron" by Johann Strauss, "The Merry Widow" by Franz Legar and others.
