Alexandr Ivanovich received primary education from a clerk in a parish church, then in a zemstvo school. After graduating with honors, he entered the Gymnasium in 1880. After graduating from the Gymnasium in 1888, Alexandr Ivanovich entered the medical faculty of the Imperial Kharkov University. He graduated in 1893.
Alexandr Ivanovich worked at Kharkov and Warsaw Universities (1893-1897), at the department of Neuropathology and Psychiatry of the Military Medical Academy named after Vladimir Mikhailovich Bekhterev (since 1897), in the biochemical laboratory of the Institute of Experimental Medicine named after Ivan Petrovich Pavlov (1901-1915).
Alexandr Ivanovich was a head of the Department of Psychiatry at Yuryev University(now The University of Tartu) and Voronezh State University (1918-1920), Rostov-on-Don University (1920-1929). Since 1929, at the Ukrainian Institute of Psychiatry and Social Psychohygiene (Kharkov), since 1932, at the Ukrainian Psychoneurological Academy, the first president of which was elected. Author of more than 120 scientific works.
