Alexey Mikhailovich Spassky was born in 1849 in the Griboyedov village, Morshansky district, Tambov Governorate (now Tambov, Tambovskaya oblast, Russian Federation) in the family of a priest.
Alexey Mikhailovich received his initial education at Tambov Theological School. In 1870, he graduated from Tambov Theological Seminary, then from Kiev Theological Academy with the degree of candidate of theology (1874).
After graduation, Alexey Mikhailovich worked as a Latin lecturer at Tambov Theological Seminary (1874-1882). Then he held the position of an inspector (1882-1887) and rector (1887-1900) at Voronezh Theological Seminary. During 1886-1900, Alexey Mikhailovich worked as an editor of the Voronezh diocesan journal.
Alexey Mikhailovich was a dean of the Trinity Cathedral (since 1900) and Mitred Archpriest (1913). He was also a deputy of the III State Duma (1907-1912), Octobrist. He organized the celebration of the 150th anniversary of Voronezh Theological Seminary in 1899. Since 1882, Spassky's sermons had been published in Voronezh diocesan journal. Alexey Mikhailovich was a member of many public institutions and charities, chairman of the brotherhood of holy bishops Mitrofan and Tikhon (since 1890).
Alexey Mikhailovich advocated the rapprochement of the Octobrists with The Union of the Russian People and the All-Russian National Union.
In January 1880, Alexey Mikhailovich married Evgenia Mikhailovna, the daughter of Mikhail Petrovich Kadomsky, a lecturer at Tambov Theological Seminary.
