He served as Portland Professor of New Testament at the University of Gloucestershire from 1999 to 2013. He has also taught at Gordon–Conwell Theological Seminary, Street John"s College, Nottingham, the University of Sheffield and Wycliffe College, Toronto. He has written commentaries on John, Ephesians, Colossians, and Hebrews.
Lincoln argues against the Pauline authorship of Ephesians on linguistic and theological grounds.
In 2015, a Festschrift was published in his honour. Conception, Reception, and the Spirit: Essays in Honor of Lincoln included contributions from Philip Esler, James Doctorate. G. Dunn, and John Goldingay.
