In June 1941 he graduated from high school with honors, from June 1942 to October 1946 was the Red Army soldier and participated in the WWII. After the demobilization, he entered the Kuibyshev State Institute. At the third year of his studies, Arkady Pavlovich became a chairman of the student scientific society and started receiving a special scholarship. After receiving a bachelor degree, he stayed at the Department of Eye Diseases at the Kuibyshev Medical Institute as a resident medical practitioner and a post-graduate student. In 1956 he presented his thesis on corneal transplant surgery and was elected a teaching assistant at the department he worked at.
In 1964, A.P. Nesterov presented his doctorate thesis and was elected the head of the Eye Diseases Department at the Kazan Medical Institute. In 1965 he was awarded the professor academic degree.
From 1966 to 1974 Arkady Pavlovich also worked as the editor-in-chief of the Kazan Medical Journal and still remains a member of its editorial board. In 1968 he was elected as a member of the Health Commission at the Kazan City Council. In 1974, A.P. Nesterov was elected the head of the Eye Diseases Department at the Medical Faculty at the Russian National Research Medical University named after N.I. Pirogov (now - the Russian State Medical University), and since 1976 and up to the present he heads the laboratory, that conducts research on eye microsurgery. In 1975 he was awarded the USSR State Prize.
In 1985, the State Committee on Inventions and Discoveries registered A.P. Nesterov’s discovery "The phenomenon of functional (reversible) blockade of the human eye scleral sinus - the Nesterov effect." A.P. Nesterov is one of the founders of the new direction in the ophthalmology – hydrostatics and hydrodynamics of the eye.
Currently A.P. Nesterov continues to successfully work as a team leader, supervisor, scientist, physician and inventor. In 1997 he was elected an Honorary Head of the Eye Diseases Department at the Russian State Medical University. He is the scientific supervisor of the research laboratory "Eye Microsurgery" at the Russian State Medical University and the head of the Academic Scientific Group at the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences. In 1999, an initiative group of ophthalmologists created the Regional Society of Moscow Ophthalmologists and unanimously elected Arkady Pavlovich its president. In 1999, by the order of the Moscow Health Committee was established the Moscow City Glaucoma Center and A.P. Nesterov was appointed its head.
In 2000, A.P. Nesterov and his scientific team were awarded with the Government of the Russian Federation Prize in 1999 for the development and introduction into clinical practice new microsurgical technologies and instruments for the treatment of eye diseases. Two years later, in 2002 he received the Award of the academic fellow T.I. Eroshevsky for his research on gerontology and glaucoma.
In 1999, an initiative group of ophthalmologists created the Regional Society of Moscow Ophthalmologists and unanimously elected Arkady Pavlovich its president.
