Beesham received a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of South Africa in 1976. Two years later he earned his Bachelor of Science degree and a Master of Science degree in 1981 from the same university. In 1988, Aroonkumar was given a Doctor of Philosophy degree from the University of Cape Town.
Beesham began his career as a laboratory assistant at the University of Natal (nowadays University of KwaZulu-Natal) in 1976. Three years later he took a position of a lecturer at the University of Durban-Westville (nowadays University of KwaZulu-Natal), where he worked until 1989. Since 1990 Aroonkumar has been a professor and head of the department of mathematical sciences at the University of Zululand.
Beesham is a member of Royal Astronomical Society, International Society of General Relativity and Gravitation and Royal Society of South Africa.
On February 3, 1980 Aroonkumar Beesham married Nirupa Maharaj Beesham. They have three children.
