He was also the Director of the Minnesota Institute of Psychiatry, the Editor and Columnist for PSA Today, the newsletter of the Minnesota Psychoanalytic Institute and Society and the Chair of the Faculty Committee of the Minnesota Psychoanalytic Institute. He wrote Sexual Addiction: An Integrated Approach in 1998.
Aviel is fond of composing music, playing keyboards, lifting weights, photography, writing poetry and going for walks.
Aviel married Diane Grace, an artist, on August 27, 1995.
