Kinariwala was born on October 14, 1926, in Ahmedabad, India; the son of Jamnadas and Hiralaxmi (Shodhan) Kinariwala. He came to the United States in 1951 and naturalized in 1963.

Kinariwala received a Bachelor of Science degree from Benares Hindu University in 1950. Four years later he was given a Master of Science degree and a Doctor of Philosophy degree in 1957 from the University of California in Berkeley.
Kinariwala began his career as an electrical engineer at Cosmos India Rubber Works, Ltd. in 1950 and held it for a year. In 1956, he became an acting assistant professor at the University of California at Berkeley. Then in 1957 Bharat took a position of a member of technical staff at Bell Telephone Laboratory in New Jersey.
Since 1966, Bharat has been a professor at the University of Hawaii. Kinariwala was a chairman in the department of electrical engineering at the same university in 1969-1975 and in 1978-1981. Nowadays he is professor emeritus at this university.
Kinariwala is a member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers and Sigma Xi.
On April 23, 1953 Bharat Kinariwala Married Marva Schor. They have 2 children.
