(This novel, published for the first time in English, is o...)
This novel, published for the first time in English, is one of the most important statements about the Duvalier regime in Haiti, written by a Haitian who played a prominent role in the revolutionary movement that brought down the Lescot regime in January 1946. Depestre's ironic note denying historical origins for the novel does not obscure the scathing caricature of Papa Doc Duvalier and the bloodbath that he visited in his own country, which is called, Zacharyland, after the fictionalized President-for-life Zoocrates Zachary.

Dignity is a touching and readable account by Aristide, one that refutes much disinformation circulated about him during his exile. It also constitutes a major document for historians and students of the difficult institution of democracy in the Caribbean.

The first novel of the Haitian novelist Jacques Stephen Alexis, General Sun, My Brother appears here for the first time in English. Its depiction of the nightmarish journey of the unskilled laborer Hilarion and his wife from the slums of Port-au-Prince to the cane fields of the Dominican Republic has brought comparisons to the work of Emile Zola, André Malraux, Richard Wright, and Ernest Hemingway.

Carrol F. Coates's translation, Waiting for the Vote of the Wild Animals, introduces English-language audiences to Kourouma's irreverent view of the machinations of the African dictators who played the West against the East during the thirty years of the cold war. Profiting from western financial support, the dictators built palaces, shrines, and hunting preserves for their personal gratification as they paraded about with numerous mistresses, marabouts, and advisers.

Born in Dakar but of Guinean origin, Mariama Barry claims both Senegal and Guinea as "her" countries. This dual background lends her significant and widespread visibility not only because she is the first woman writer of Guinea to have gained extensive international recognition but also because Senegalese women novelists were the first African women writing in French to win international acclaim.

Quotations:
"For the past twenty years, I have become increasingly interested in the history and culture of various countries where French is the primary language for international and, sometimes, national communication. I have studied the literature and history of Quebec, Haiti and other francophone islands in the Caribbean, and more recently those of Madagascar and of northern, Western, and Central Africa. These countries include former French colonies and territories still under French administration: Martinique, Guadeloupe, and French Guyana. Each writer has dealt differently with the confrontation of unrelated languages and cultures".
"In translating fiction, poetry, essays, and occasionally theater from various countries, I continue to delve into a wide variety of cultures, languages, and religious beliefs. The process of trying to make available the creative vision of writers with widely differing cultural backgrounds for English-speaking readers unable to read French with ease, and little or no knowledge of the cultures of Haitian Vodu or various other religions of African origin, has become a pursuit that constantly elicits my curiosity and constitutes a challenge to my own vision of the world and my ability to render that vision in English".
Carrol Franklin Coates has been a member of the American Translators Association, Haitian Studies Association, American Association of Teachers of French, African Literature Association, American Council for Quebec Studies, Conseil International Des Etudes Francophones.
Carrol Franklin is married to Clarisse Rahajamanarivo. They have two children, Juliana Laure Carol and Lucie Haja Lenore.
