He was born in Shunteh, Kwangtung, China in 1888.

Education

Chih-i Teng received his advanced education in America, where he first attended the University of California and later the University of Wisconsin, specializing in the study of soil and receiving Master of Science degree in agriculture in 1914. While at the latter University, he was awarded a research fellowship in soils and secured much practical experience through his connection with the United States agricultural experiment station.

Career

Since returning to China in 1914, Chih-i Teng was first with the Canton Government agricultural experiment station and then instructor in the Hunan Polytechnic Institute in Changsha, China, chief of the division of soils and an expert in the Central Government agricultural experiment station in Peking, China in 1915, professor of soils in the National Southeastern University in Nanking, China in 1919, Dean of the College of Agriculture and Forestry of Chungshan University in Canton and concurrently chief of the Canton Government agricultural experimental station from 1920 till 1927, director of the institute for the development of industries of Kwangsi and also in charge of the bureau of construction of Kwangsi since 1927.
