A surviving retainer of Yukinasa Konishi, a warlord who served the Toyotomis, he rose in revolt in 1637 against the Tokugawa Shogunate, pretending to be a Catholic.With Shiro Amakusa as head of the rebellion, he occupied the castle of Shimabara. Although he successfully defeated the forces of Naizen takura, the commander of the Shogunate expedition against the rebels, he was defeated by Nobutsuna Matsudaira, Itakura's successor. His castle fell in 1638. When the Shogunate troops rushed into the castle, Chuemon attempted unsuccessfully to stab Nobutsuna singlehanded and killed himself.
