Claudette Hegel was born on March 17, 1959, in Bismarck. She is the daughter of Reuben Hegel, a farmer, rancher, and handyman, and Alma Lydia Hegel, a farmer and homemaker.
From 1989 to 1991 Claudette Hegel attended the University of Minnesota. She also studied at Minnesota School of Business in 1992.
From 1977 to 1994 Claudette Hegel worked as a bookkeeper in Bismarck and Minneapolis. Since 1988 she has also been a freelance writer and editor. She also serves as a volunteer at public libraries, elementary schools, churches and other organizations.
Claudette Hegel has contributed short stories to periodicals for children as well as articles that explore children's literature to mainstream magazines and newspapers.
Her books include Distinguished Children's Literature, The Newbery and Caldecott Books in the Classroom, and Newbery and Caldecott Trivia and More for Every Day of the Year. They focus on children's literature and the major prizes given out for outstanding children's literature.
