Daijo Tokiwa was born in 1870 in Miyagi Prefecture, Japan.
Tokiwa's family was affiliated with the Ōtani Branch 大谷 of Jōdō Shinshū 淨土真宗, and he became a priest at the age of 17. He graduated from Tokyo University with a degree in philosophy.
After graduating from Tokyo University, stayed behind as an instructor. During this period made five expeditions to China in search of Buddhist lore. Promoted professor at alma mater (1921), and after retiring due to age limit joined Toyo University. He was an authority on Buddhist philosophy. Wrote many books on Buddhism in both Japanese and Chinese, outstanding of which is "Research in Buddhist Character."
