The book Thistle Journal: And Other Essays tells us the story about the building of Minock's house. On this land and in this home shared with his wife, Minock goes on to observe and make note of the surrounding community of people, plants, and the various creatures that make appearances while Minock cultivates a garden. Doing his best to maintain a natural landscape - one conducive to the habits and habitat of local fauna - Minock writes thoughtful essays that allow the reader to come to know and understand his cares and worries in the ways that an intimate friendship might progress, perhaps slowly at first, then, with the passing of time, forming a bond based upon common concerns and stewardship of the environment.

In 1998 Minock published his book Thistle Journal And Other Essays. These eighteen miscellaneous essays tell how Minock sets about to build his own house and live harmoniously in a natural setting. These essays include a brief yet absorbing chronicle of the construction of his rural Michigan house at a time when his fundamental knowledge of building a home was practically nil. Some of these essays have appeared previously in such publications as Sierra, Snowy Egret, and Country Journal.
