David Fair was born on July 20, 1952 in Coldwater, Michigan, United States; the son of Jerry Fair, an architect, and Ann (Robinson) Fair, a teacher.
David Fair grew up in Michigan with three brothers and one sister. They lived at a lake every summer and moved into town during the winter months.
David Fair studied at Thomas Jefferson College. In college he took courses in childhood education, then switched to film making, and ended up with a Bachelor of Philosophy.
After graduation David Fair moved to California with his friends and spent a year writing songs, painting, and shooting a film. When his savings ran out he relocated to the East Coast.
David Fair worked as a librarian and bookmobile head at Carroll County Public Library in Westminster, Maryland since 1977.
During his career, Fair was a performer in rock’n’roll bands, including Half Japanese (formed along with his brother Jad) and Coo Coo Rockin’ Time.
After his son's birth in 1989, he switched from songwriting to story writing. He wrote the book "The Fabulous Four Skunks", published in 1996.
