David Featherstone was born in 1945 in Iowa City, Iowa, United States.
Featherstone studied folklore and mythology at the University of California in Los Angeles and attended the School of Oriental and African Studies at the University of London. He earned an AB in Anthropology at the University of California at Berkeley (1967) and an MA at the University of Oregon in Eugene (1971).
Since 1977 Featherstone has been working for the Friends of Photography in Carmel, California, as an executive associate and has been writing book reviews for their newsletter. His previous working experience includes being curator of the Historical Photograph Collection of the University of Oregon Library in Eugene (1974-76) and teaching photography at the Maude I. Kerns Art Center in the same city.
As an art critic, he focuses on photographers who work from an inner need and whose work expresses archetypal forms.
He belongs to SPE and VSW and was awarded an NEA Art Critic's Fellowship in both 1977 and 1979.
