Introduction to Photography is a self-directed approach to introductory photography designed for those with little or no previous experience with photography. The text covers the basic skills needed to make effective black-and-white photographs and to process, print, and finish them. The text also provides a basic introduction to of color composition. Each unit has clear objectives, an overview, exercises, and lab assignments. Starting with a unit tracing the development of photography and contemporary practice, the book then moves into explaining the basics of equipment, black and white processing, printing, and finishing. After fully explaining the basics, the text moves into composition, filters, basic lighting, flash photography, and some additional advanced topics.

David L. DeVries was born in United States.
David L. DeVries obtained a Bachelor of Arts in Art from the University of Southern Colorado in Pueblo in 1973. He specialized in photography at the University of Iowa's School of Art in Iowa City, where he completed an Master of Arts (1975) and an Master of Fine Arts (1976), studying under John Schulze.
Since 1978 David L. DeVries has been an assistant professor in photography at Bemidji State University in Minnesota. Previously he taught in Canada at the University of Manitoba's School of Art in Winnipeg (1976-1977 ) and was acting head of the Photography Department from 1977 to 1978.
