Legany was born on January 19, 1916 in Szombathely, Hungary. He was the son of Dezso and Erzsebet (Serenyi) Legany.

Legany attended University of Pecs and graduated from it in 1937 with Legum Doctor degree. He also studied at Hungarian Academy of Sciences and graduated from it in 1981 with Doctor of Musical Sciences degree. He studied composition with Janos Viski, folk music with Zoltán Kodaly, musical history with Bartha and Szabolcsi at the Budapest Academy of Music.
Legany served as a professor of music at Liszt Academy of Music from 1951 till 1958. That same year he became a professor of Bartok Conservatory of Music and worked there during 15 years. In 1973 he changed his position to became a head of Hungarian Music department at the Institute for Musicology of Hungarian Academy of Sciences.
Legany was a member of International Kodaly Society, Hungarian Kodaly Society, Musicological Commission of Hungarian Academy of Sciences, Association of Hungarian Musicians, American Liszt Society and International Liszt Centre in Stockholm.
