Begichev was born on September 28, 1786, in Tula oblast, Russian Federation into a family of the ancient nobility.
Dmitry Nikitich was brought up in a Moscow University Noble Boarding School. Then he studied at the Page Corps, which was a military academy in Imperial Russia, in 1796-1802; finished it in the rank of a cornet.
After graduating Dmitry Nikitich was sent to the Alexandrian Hussars regiment, but on August, 21 he left military service, enlisting as a registrar in the College of Foreign Affairs. A year later, on November 18, 1803, Dmitry Nikitich was dismissed from service with the rank of the translator. On February 2, 1804, he again entered military service, with the same rank of the cornet, in the Chuguev Cossack Regiment - inspector adjutant of Lieutenant General A.S. Kologrivov.
In 1805 was a participant in the campaign in Austria, fought under Austerlitz. In 1806 as part of the Hussar Regiment participated in many battles, performed the responsible and dangerous military operations. In January 1813 joined the ranks of the Active Army Guard Hussar Regiment. In 1817, with the rank of colonel, Dmitry Nikitich was transferred to the Irkutsky Hussar Regiment. In 1819 he was appointed the duty staff officer of the 2nd infantry corps, and after 9 months get a discharge for family reasons and settled in Moscow.
Dmitry Nikitich was governor of Voronezh Province from 1830 to 1836, and in 1840 he was appointed as a senator. He showed himself as an active and humane administrator. On July 13, 1836, he was appointed Chief Prosecutor of the 3rd Division of the 5th Department of the Governing Senate, and on October 29 of the same year he was transferred to the same position in the 1st Division.
Dmitry Nikitich published his literary works anonymously. His five-volume novel The Kholmsky Family was published in Moscow in 1832. The language of The Kholmsky Family is fluent and often colloquial. The novel contains numerous quotes from Russian and French literature, and even quotes of "worldly wisdom" from Benjamin Franklin. The Kholmsky Family is an important antecedent of Leo Tolstoy's War and Peace. Like War and Peace it reflects the world-view of the Russian gentry.
