MacGregor practised law in Scotland, where he was admitted to the bar in 1951. He worked as a partner of Maclay Murray & Spens, a law firm headquartered in Glasgow, and also served as a notary public. A notary public is a public officer authorised to witness documents and certify signatures.
Maclay Murray & Spens was founded in 1871 in Glasgow by David Maclay, David Murray and John Spens as the first law firm in Scotland with a specifically commercial practice. By the time of its later history it had offices in Aberdeen, Edinburgh and London. In 2017 the firm announced a combination with the global firm Dentons, which completed later that year with the adoption of the Dentons brand.
