Emily Olivia Laura Blunt is a British actress. She is known for her roles in The Devil Wears Prada (2006), The Young Victoria (2009), Edge of Tomorrow (2014), and The Girl on the Train (2016), among many others.
Background
Blunt was born on February 23, 1983, in Roehampton, South West London, England, the second of four children in the family of Joanna Mackie, a former actress, and teacher, and Oliver Simon Peter Blunt, a barrister. She has three siblings: Felicity (Sister), Sebastian (Brother) & Suzanna (Sister). Her grandfather was Major General Peter Blunt, and her uncle is Member of Parliament Crispin Blunt. The famous actress comes from a traditional British family. Her close relatives served in the national army.
Education
Emily received a rigorous education at Ibstock Place School, a co-ed private school at Roehampton. However, young Emily Blunt had a stammer, since she was a kid of 8. Her mother took her to relaxation classes, which did not do anything. She reached a turning point at 12 when a teacher cleverly asked her to play a character with a different voice and said, "I really believe in you". Blunt ended up using a northern accent, and it did the trick, her stammer disappeared.
From 1999 - 2001, Blunt went to Hurtwood House, the top co-ed boarding school where she would excel at sport, cello, and singing. She also had two years of drama studies at Hurtwood's theatre course.
Emily Blunt had initially intended to become a live translator for the United Nations. However, Blunt’s appearance in a student production of the musical Bliss (2000) at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival brought her to the attention of an agent, and she soon appeared opposite Judi Dench in a West End production of The Royal Family in 2001. The next year Blunt starred as Juliet in a production of Romeo and Juliet at the Chichester Festival. She was signed up by an agent, Kenneth Mcreddie, who led her to the West End and the BBC, scoring her roles in several period dramas on stage as well as on TV productions, such as Foyle's War (2002), Henry VIII (2003) and Empire (2005). In 2001, she appeared as "Gwen Cavendish" opposite Dame Judi Dench in Sir Peter Hall's production of "The Royal Family" at Haymarket Theatre. For that role, she won the Evening Standard Award for Best Newcomer. In 2002, she played "Juliet" in "Romeo and Juliet" at the prestigious Chichester Festival.
Blunt's career ascended to international fame after she starred as "Isolda" opposite Alex Kingston in Boudica (2003). A year later, she won critical acclaim for her breakout performance as "Tamsin", a well-educated, cynical and deceptive 16-year-old beauty in My Summer of Love (2004), a story of two lonely girls from the opposite ends of the social heap. Emily Blunt and her co-star, Natalie Press, shared an Evening Standard British Film award for Most Promising Newcomer. In 2005, she spent a few months in Australia filming Irresistible (2006) with Susan Sarandon and Sam Neill. Blunt gave an impressive performance as "Mara", a cunning young destroyer who acts crazy and surreptitiously provokes paranoia in others. She also continued her work on British television, starring as "Natasha" in Stephen Poliakoff's Gideon's Daughter (2005), opposite Bill Nighy, a role that won her a 2007 Golden Globe Award for Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role.
She continued the line of playing manipulative characters as "Emily", a caustic put-upon assistant to Meryl Streep's lead in The Devil Wears Prada (2006). Blunt's performance with a neurotic twist added a dimension of sarcasm to the comedy and gained her much attention as well as new jobs: in two dramas opposite Tom Hanks, then in the title role in the period drama, The Young Victoria (2009). Her most recent works include appearances as an antiques dealer "Gwen Conliffe" in The Wolfman (2010) and as the ballerina in The Adjustment Bureau (2011).
Blunt soon landed lead roles in such movies as Salmon Fishing in the Yemen (2011), a comedy-drama about a quixotic quest to introduce salmon to Yemen, and she also voiced the romantic heroine in the animated hit Gnomeo and Juliet (2011) and its sequel, Sherlock Gnomes (2018). Blunt joined the cast of the time-travel thriller Looper (2012) before playing a sergeant in another, more action-driven time-travel film, Edge of Tomorrow (2014). Her singing was on display in Into the Woods (2014), the Disney adaptation of the Stephen Sondheim musical. She then won plaudits for her turn as an FBI agent in the gritty crime drama Sicario (2015).
In 2016 Blunt received marquee billing for her role as a glamorous queen in The Huntsman: Winter’s War opposite Charlize Theron. Later that year Blunt starred as an alcoholic divorcée who may have committed murder in The Girl on the Train, an adaptation of Pamela Hawkins’s bestseller. She also did voice work for the animated comedies My Little Pony: The Movie, which was based on the popular TV series, and Animal Crackers (both 2017). Blunt continued to show her range when she starred in the horror movie A Quiet Place (2018), about a young family attempting to survive in a world that has been invaded by monsters that kill at any sound. Her husband, John Krasinski, whom she married in 2010, co-starred in and directed the film. In Mary Poppins Returns (2018) Blunt took on the mantle of the eponymous nanny, garnering reviews that declared her performance “practically perfect in every way.”
Emily Blunt is the recipient of several accolades, including a Golden Globe Award and Screen Actors Guild Award, and has been nominated for two British Academy Film Awards.
In 2015, Blunt was listed 98th in FHM's Sexiest Women of 2015. She was also named among Entertainment Weekly’s “30 Under 30: The Actresses” List of 2008.
She was the new face of Max Mara add campaign (2007).
Emily Blunt holds citizenship in both the United States and United Kingdom, but that didn't prevent her fans from getting upset when she weighed in on American politics. Blunt made a comment in 2015 to The Hollywood Reporter following a Republican primary debate featuring Donald Trump, and it did not land well.
"I became an American citizen recently, and that night we watched the Republican debate, and I thought, 'This was a terrible mistake. What have I done?" Blunt said at the time. The blowback to her comment was intense, and it caused her to issue a public apology on the Today Show.
While she might not be speaking about Trump anytime soon, there are some political matters that she will weigh in on - including Brexit.
"I think it’s really sad. I’m really bummed about it,” she disclosed. “I just think that, ‘Globalization is here guys, come on!’ It is an interesting time in the world because it’s fragile because it feels unsafe. It’s become this sort of ‘each to their own’ mentality and you feel it. You feel people becoming more guarded, and more in the need to protect. It’s sad." - she said.
Views
According to Emily Blunt, the absence of “spoonfed’ exposition in the dialogue made the film seem more realistic, adding that “There’s too much dialogue in movies. The most cinematic thing is to offer people the power of suggestion.”
Blunt is cautious about the type of roles she accepts, being well aware of the dangers of typecasting. She has stated that when picking a role, she likes to pick roles “dramatically different” from the previous role. She’s said that “I don’t want to necessarily be anointed Action Girl because I’ve been in two films where I have a gun. (I also want to) avoid having to be in the gym for all my roles.”
Blunt was motivated to join A Quiet Place because the film represents her greatest fear as a mother of two kids: “I’m scared of being in a brutal world and not being able to protect my children.”
Blunt has stated that some of her characters’ quirks are inspired by people she knows, saying “I’m combining, so it’s not stealing, it’s research.
Blunt has been an outspoken advocate of education for young women. In April 2018 she spoke at Variety’s “Power of Women” event: “There are over 130 million girls missing out on an education because they have to work or they are married by the age of 12… If women are given a voice they use it. When they are handed the purse strings, the communities thrive.” Blunt also uses her celebrity as a platform to raise money for the Malala Fund, the non-profit founded by education activist Malala Yousafzai.
Quotations:
"People quit on jobs. They quit on marriages. They quit on school. There's an immediacy of this day and age that doesn't lend itself to being committed to anything."
"I find it quite hard to sum up my relationship in a sound bite. I feel that it trivializes it for other people's pleasure. It's an adventure."
"It's always a little mind-boggling to realize that these famous actors know who I am."
Personality
Emily is a highly versatile actress and a multifaceted person. Her talents include singing and playing cello; she is also skilled at horseback riding.
Blunt struggled with stuttering from the ages of 7 to 14, with the problem being at its worst when she was 12. Blunt hasn’t forgotten her struggle with stuttering and is currently on the board for the American Institute for Stuttering. She has also said that the film The King’s Speech was extremely accurate in portraying the difficulty of trying to get over stuttering.
Like any fan, Blunt has a list of peers and Hollywood giants that she admires. Among the list are Meryl Streep, Susan Sarandon, Helen Mirren, and Judi Dench. However, the woman that Blunt most wants to be like is Cate Blanchett.
Blunt generally does not like horror movies but has selected Jaws as her favorite.

From the age of seven to 14, Blunt struggled with stuttering. She credits a school teacher for helping her overcome the stutter through acting.
Her height is 5′ 8″ (1.73 m). Emily has light brown hair and blue eyes.
She has a rich, full voice, voluptuous figure and bawdy sense of humor.
