In 1971, E.I. Sokolov defended his doctoral dissertation on the problem of myocardial pathology: "Myocardial Electrolytes in Heart Failure."
After defending his doctoral dissertation, Yevgeny Ivanovich worked as the head of the Department of Internal Diseases of the Moscow Medical Institute named after N.A. Semashko (MMSI). The results of clinical and psychological research in patients with hypertensive and coronary heart disease formed the basis of the monograph "Emotional Stress and Response of the Cardiovascular System." For this monograph E.I. Sokolov was awarded the G.F. Lang. In 1973, Professor Evgeniy Sokolov was appointed pro-rector of the Moscow International Medical University (now MGMSU) for academic work, and in 1982 he was elected rector of this institute, who headed for 20 years, while working as head of the Department of Internal Diseases. In 1991, Yevgeny Ivanovich was elected a corresponding member, in 1995 - a full member of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences. He is a member of many scientific societies, including the American Diabetes Association.
For 30 years Evgeniy Sokolov studies the problems of cardiology and diabetes, he is the author of 6 monographs, 4 of which have been translated into foreign languages: "Emotions and Heart Pathology" (1984), "Emotions and Atherosclerosis" (1987), "Diabetes and Atherosclerosis" (1996) "Diabetic Heart" (2003).
In recent years, Evgeniy Sokolov deals with the pathology of internal organs in diabetes mellitus.
Yevgeny Ivanovich worked at the Center for Space Research, was engaged in the selection and preparation of cosmonauts for flights. They proposed the principles of psycho-vegetative testing, which were applied first to the selection of cosmonauts, and subsequently to the diagnosis of clinical patients.
