After graduation of the high school in Batumi in 1976, he entered Moscow Aviation University named after S. Ordzhonikidze, and graduated from it in 1983. Major in «Two-way aircrafts», with qualification mechanical engineer. In 2001 he graduated from postgraduate course of MSU of service, defended the Ph.D. thesis. He has been given candidate of economic science degree.
Since September 1983, after graduation from MAU named after S. Ordzhonikidze, he worked in SC “Energia” named after S.P. Korolev as an engineer, a senior engineer, a test-instructor cosmonaut. Took part in programs «Mir-Shattle», «Mir–NASA». In August 1997 he was included in the cosmonaut group of SC “Energia” as a candidate in test-cosmonauts; Since January 1998 till November 1999 had general space training. In November 1999 he was given a qualification «test-cosmonaut». Since February 2012 he was in the cosmonaut team of Roscosmos.
