From 29 August 1984 to September 1986 - worked as master of power equipment at the Experimental Machine-Building Plant (ZEM) of NPO Energia. Since 16 September 1986 - before enlistment in Cosmonaut Corps he worked as an engineer of the 292nd GSC NPO Energia section. Participated in the astronaut training and the experiment Pilot. Tested the Kvant-2 module as an investigator. He was engaged in technical training and on-Board training of astronauts along with the development of technical documentation on these issues. Besides this he was responsible for the planning of the astronaut training.
1 October 1992 to February 1994 - he participated in the general cosmonaut training at Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Centre. On 25 February, 1994 after successful passing of all examinations and tests the Interdepartmental Qualification Commission (MWCC) took decision to quality him as a test cosmonaut. On June 16, 1994 he was appointed to the post of test cosmonaut in the 291st division.
April 1, 1994 - By decision of SIMC was appointed as a flight engineer of the EO-22 primary crew (start in May 1996) and the EO-20 second (backup) crew (start in August 1995), but he did not start training on that crew because of the need of partial examination on the ECVs. From 1994 to 1997, he was trained as a member of the cosmonaut group under Mir Orbital Station program. From October 1998 to January 1999, he passed training as a member of the Cosmonaut Team under the ISS Flight Program.
In June 1999 the crew was disbanded due to the termination of manned space flights to Mir station.
On June 15, 1999 he started his training at the Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Centre as a flight engineer of the second (backup) crew under the ISS-1R program (ISS - Savior) together with V. Korzun. In case of failure of automatic docking of the "Zvezda" service module with a bunch of FGB "Zarya"/Node-1 it was supposed to send into orbit one of these crews to conduct the docking in manual mode. He passed training till July 6, 2000. There was no need for «unnominal» crew launching as the automatic docking was performed successfully.
Until August 2001 he passed training for a space flight as a flight engineer of the ISS-3 backup crew. Until May 2002 he was trained as a flight engineer of the ISS-5 primary crew.
June 5 - 7 December 2002 - as a flight engineer for the 5th ISS expedition together with V. Korzun and Peggy Whitson. He started as a mission specialist on June 5, 2002 on the Endeavour STS-111 Shuttle . He landed on the Endeavour STS-113 Shuttle as a flight specialist.
