Studied at University School, Hastings.
Began studying at the local school of art under Mr. Geo. Ward at Rochester, from thence to the Slade School under Professor Fred. Browne; also at Calderon’s Animal School.
In October 1899 he proceeded to South Africa by S.S. Moor as war artist to the Illustrated London News and Illustrated Sporting and Dramatic News, and, joining the forces under General Buller, was present at the battles of Colenso, Venter’s Spruit, Spion Kop, Vaal Krantz, Monti Christo, Pieter’s Hill, and the Relief of Ladysmith. But was unfortunately invalided home with dysentery during Buller’s further advance on Newcastle and the passes of Laing’s Nek. Studied in Paris at Julien’s, 1901. Illustrated London News, etc.
