Fukuzawa Ichiro was born in Gumma Prefecture in 1898.
Fukuzawa Ichiro studied briefly at the Tokyo University before he studied painting in France from 1924 until 1929.
A surrealist, he joined the Dokuritsu Bijutsuten (Independent Art Association). On account of trouble in that organization, he left it and established Bijutsu Bunka Kyokai (Fine Art Culture Association) and became its leader. He left this organization after the Pacific War. His representative work is a series of paintings inspired by Dante’s Divine Comedy.
