Gennady Trofimovich Stavonin was born on January 15, 1935, in Baku, Azerbaijan.
Gennady Trofimovich graduated from a ten-year music school at Baku Conservatory (piano and composition class, 1954), and from the Composition Department of Leningrad Conservatory (now the N. A. Rimsky-Korsakov Saint Petersburg State Conservatory) (1960).
Gennady Trofimovich worked as a concertmaster of the Voronezh Opera and Ballet Theater (1961-1964), an executive secretary (1966-1969, 1981-1984) and a chairman of the board (1993-1994) of the Voronezh organization of the Union of Composers, head of the musical section of the Youth Theater in Voronezh (1970-1975, 1994-1995).
