In 1959-was graduated from secondary school No.16 in Saratov. In 1960-was graduated from the first course of the 6th Military School of the initial training of the Air Force pilots of the Baltic Military District in Kamenka. In 1964 -was graduated from the Balashov Higher Military Aviation School of Pilots and received a diploma of "pilot-engineer". On June 24, 1978 -was graduated in absentia from the Air Force Academy named after J.A. Gagarin. He defended his thesis and received the degree of candidate of technical sciences.
From November 1965 to December 1967 - passed the general space training. At the end of training on December 30, 1967, he was appointed cosmonaut of the second detachment. From January 1968 to 1972 - had been trained on the program "Almaz" as a part of a group of astronauts. From November 1971 to April 1972 - had been prepared in a conditional crew with Eduard Stepanov. From September 11, 1972 to February 1973 - had been trained as the commander of the third (backup) crew for the flight to OPS-101 “Almaz” (Salyut-2), together with Lev Demin. Flights to OPS-101 were canceled due to depressurization of the station "Salyut-2" in orbit on April 1973.

In 1975 - 1979 - again had been prepared for the program "Almaz" as part of a group of astronauts. In 1979 - 1980 - had been trained for a test flight on the Transportation Chain Supply (TCS) as the commander of a conditional crew, together with Vladimir Preobrazhensky and Valery Romanov. Participated in the tests of TCS on the ground model of the ship. The flight did not take place due to the closure of the manned SSO program "Almaz" and TKS.
From 26 to 28 August in 1974 as commander of the “Soyuz-15” spacecraft, together with L. Demin in accordance with the program of the 2nd expedition to the “Salyut-3” OPS. The flight program provided for docking with the “Salyut-3” station and work on it for 25 days. However, the docking did not take place due to the failure of the control system of the ship's close-correcting propulsion system (instead of braking, the engine was switched on for overclocking).
