George Tyssen Butler was born in 1943 in Chester, England, United Kingdom.
Butler holds a BA with honors in Writing from the University of North Carolina (1966) and an MA from Hollins College in Virginia in English Writing (1968).
Since 1974 he has been president of White Mountain Films in New Hampshire. Between 1970 and 1974 he worked as a freelance photographer and in 1969 he was a Vista volunteer in Detroit. Newsweek hired him as a writer-reporter in 1968. Butler produced and directed the highly acclaimed film documentary Pumping Iron, based on his book.
