George graduated from the Voronezh Realshule, Moscow Technical High School, aviation courses of the Moscow Military School.
From 1916 he served in the French army. In 1919-1960, Tarassov lived in Belgium. From 1930 he had been a priest. In 1933, he became a monk. From 1940, George served as rector of St. Panteleimon Russian Orthodox Church in Brussels. In 1953, he became the Bishop of Syracuse. Since 1960 George served as Archbishop of France and Western Europe, Exarch of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople. From 1960, he served as rector of the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral in Paris. In 1964-1973, George participated in the work of St. Sergius Orthodox Theological Institute in Paris. From 1968, he was a member of the Orthodox Committee of Bishops in France (since 1968).
