Matvey Afanasievich Semyonov

Background

Ignatius was born in 1791 in Arkhangelsk, in the family of the clergy.

Career

In 1820 Ignatius became a monk.

In 1827 became old Russian Bishop, Vicar of the Novgorod diocese, since 1835 Archbishop of the newly created Olonets Diocese.

Matvey Afanasievich founded a Theological Seminary in Petrozavodsk (1829). He fought actively against paganism. Matvey Afanasievich was engaged in compiling the "History of the schisms in the Church of the Russian". Archbishop of the Don and Novocherkassk (1842-1847). Archbishop of Voronezh and Zadonsky (since 1847). He increased the capital of the Mitrofan monastery from 20,000 to 70,000 rubles.

In April 1848, he was summoned to St. Petersburg to attend the Holy Synod.

Matvey Afanasievich is the author of more than 20 books of sermons and anti-fragmentary writings.
