( This book consists of Gregory Vlastos' studies on a var...)
This book consists of Gregory Vlastos' studies on a variety of themes in Plato's metaphysics, epistemology, ethics, and social philosophy. Although many of the essays have appeared in various philosophical and classical journals or symposia, new in the volume are two major studies. One is on Plato's theory of love, exploring its metaphysical dimension and its far-reaching implications for personal and political relations. The other centers on semantic and logical problems in the Sophist; it offers solutions to crucial difficulties in this fundamental Platonic work. In these essays the author presents ideas which are likely to provoke comment and may be discussed as vigorously in scholarly journals as has some of his earlier work. The other papers, some of them extensively revised, comprise virtually all the author's published work on Plato, with the exception of a few papers easily accessible elsewhere. This second edition includes three additional essays and extensive notes that were not included in the original edition.

Gregory Vlastos (1907-1991) was one of the twentieth century's most influential scholars of ancient philosophy. Over a span of more than fifty years, he published essays and book reviews that established his place as a leading authority on early Greek philosophy. The two volumes that comprise Studies in Greek Philosophy include nearly forty contributions by this acknowledged master of the philosophical essay. Many of these pieces are now considered to be classics in the field. Perhaps more than any other modern scholar, Gregory Vlastos was responsible for raising standards of research, analysis, and exposition in classical philosophy to new levels of excellence. His essays have served as paradigms of scholarship for several generations. Available for the first time in a comprehensive collection, these contributions reveal the author's ability to combine the skills of a philosopher, philologist, and historian of ideas in addressing some of the most difficult problems of ancient philosophy. Volume I collects Vlastos's essays on Presocratic philosophy. Wide-ranging concept studies link Greek science, religion, and politics with philosophy. Individual studies illuminate the thought of major philosophers such as Heraclitus, Parmenides, Anaxagoras, and Democritus. A magisterial series of studies on Zeno of Elea reveals the author's power in source criticism and logical analysis. Volume II contains essays on the thought of Socrates, Plato, and later thinkers and essays dealing with ethical, social, and political issues as well as metaphysics, science, and the foundations of mathematics.

Vlastos is important for work in two related fields. First, he examined the religious and ethical foundations of democracy, for example in his 1942 article and especially in his analytically presented 1962 article. He argued strongly for a theory of social justice based upon recognition of equal worth of individuals.
Second, his major contribution lay in pioneering the application of contemporary analytic philosophical techniques to the exegesis of Plato, notably in his 1954 article, a detailed examination of the apparent selfpredication of Plato’s Forms in Parmenides, a
study which sparked off many other contributions
and to which Vlastos himself frequently returned. In the later part of his career he worked extensively on Socrates and developed an argument for a distinct Socratic philosophy within Plato’s early dialogues. Perhaps more than any of his contempor-
aries, Vlastos combined analytic rigour with classical scholarship and a strong historical sense, the latter notably in his 1953 article and numerous other contributions to pre-Socratic and Greek historical thought.
He is also significant as a teacher of a distinguished generation of American scholars of Greek philosophy.
