McMullin received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Obstetrics in 1980 and a Doctor of Medicine degree in 1987 from Queen's University.
Also she was given a postgraduate certificate in higher education teaching from the same university in 2000.
McMullin began her career as a senior lecturer of haematology at the Queen's University in 1991. Ten years later she became a reader of haematology at the same university. Since 2006 Mary has been a clinical professor at the School of Medicine, Dentistry and Biomedical Sciences of the Queen's University. Also she is a consultant haematologist at Belfast City Hospital.
McMullin works on the pathogenesis and treatment of Acute Myeloid Leukaemia and Chronic Myeloid Leukaemia.
On July 16, 1987 Mary McMullin married Sean Curran. They have 3 children.
