He graduated from Yerevan Conservatory (in the early 1950s) and was a student of professor K.S. Saradzhev.
Gurgen Karpovich worked as the chief conductor of Voronezh Symphony Orchestra (1955-1964). He was a member of the decade of Voronezh art in Moscow (1958).
He toured Moscow, Krasnodar, Tambov, Lipetsk with the orchestra, organized a series of concerts "Voronezh Summer", introduced a concert subscription system. At the same time he worked as a teacher at Voronezh College of Music. In 1965 he moved to Dnepropetrovsk.
