Harley Erdman was born on October 6, 1962, in Brooklyn, New York, United States. He is the son of Joseph Erdman, an attorney, and Audrey Erdman (Lesser) Erdman, a psychotherapist.
Harley Erdman received bachelor's degree from the Swarthmore College in 1984. He also obtained master's and doctor's degree at the University of Texas at Austin, in 1991 and 1993 respectively.
Erdman was a co-founder of Austin’s pioneering ensemble theater company, Troupe Texass and served at the position of a co-artistic director, for two years from 1992. From 1994 he moved to the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, becoming an assistant professor of theater.
With composer Eric Sawyer, he has created the operas The Scarlet Professor and The Garden of Martyrs and with composer Aaron Jones and co-writer Gina Kaufmann, he is creating the indie-rock musical, which adapts the Don Juan legend to a contemporary college campus.
Erdman is the author of several books, he has also translated and adapted plays, and published numerous articles on the history of Jewish representation on the American stage.
He has also taught dramaturgy in El Salvador and Sri Lanka. Currently, he is a Professor of Theater at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.

Erdman married Sarita Hudson on June 17, 1989, the couple has a son - Jonah William.
