(This book was originally published prior to 1923, and rep...)
This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.

(Excerpt from Life in Mind Conduct: Studies of Organic in ...)
Excerpt from Life in Mind Conduct: Studies of Organic in Human Nature The conclusion of a sober reflection on the brief records and various revolutions of human things has been enshrined by Shakspeare in the lines of his sonnet to Time : - "Our dates are brief, and therefore we admire What thou dost foist upon us that is old, And rather have them born to our desire Than think that we before have heard them told." And long before Shakspeare's day Laotze, the Chinese contemporary of Confucius, six hundred years before Christ, had expressed the same thought. Men think new that which is old - Small fraction of human course on earth - Are the inventions of modern science new? Discovery made through rather than by the individual - No new reflections on human nature to be made nowadays - Old thoughts new to new thinkers of them - Conventional language and artificial divisions of knowledge - Separate methods of study of mind - Living structure and function in the life of mind - Origin and primal meaning of the terms of psychology - Psychical terms own a physical origin and import - Intellect, cogitation, reflection - Reason, deliberation, assimilation, rumination - Understanding, attention, ecstasy - Physical inwardness of mental feeling - Emotion and its qualities - Vagueness of metaphysical language - The organic in thought, feeling and conduct - General aim of the enquiry. The conclusion of a sober reflection on the brief records and various revolutions of human things has been enshrined by Shakspeare in the lines of his sonnet to Time: Our dates are brief, and therefore we admire What thou dost foist upon us that is old, And rather have them born to our desire Than think that we before have heard them told. (Excerpt from The Pathology of Mind Being: Third Edition o...)
Excerpt from The Pathology of Mind Being: Third Edition of the Second Part of the Physiology and Pathology of Mind, Recast, Enlarged, and Rewritten The first edition of the Physiology and Pathology of Mind was published in the year 1867, and the second edition in the year following. A third edition of the first part was published in the year 1876 as a separate treatise on the Physiology of Mind, In the order of time and development this volume on the Pathology of Mind is therefore a third edition of the second part; but in substance it is a new work, having been recast throughout, largely added to, and almost entirely rewritten. The new material which has been added includes chapters on "Dreaming" and on "Somnambulism and its Allied States," subjects which, although they may not perhaps be thought to appertain strictly to a treatise on mental pathology, will be found, when studied scientifically, to throw light upon its obscure phenomena and to help to bridge the gap between it and mental physiology. A perplexing impression was produced on my mind when I first began to study mental diseases - now upwards of twenty years ago - by the isolation in which they seemed to be. On the one hand, treatises on psychology made no mention of them, and gave not the least help towards an understanding of them; and, on the other hand, treatises on mental disorders, while giving full information concerning them, treated their subject as if it belonged to a science entirely distinct from that which was concerned with the sound mind.
