Although Solzhenitsyn criticized the translations, Olga Carlisle felt they helped bring his work to a wider audience, and contributed to Solzhenitsyn's Nobel Prize. Carlisle was president of PEN American Center (elected 1974), and actively supported writers facing censorship.
