Career
He was appointed Kazusa-no-suke (Governor of Kazusa) and called Sukehachiro. In the battles of Hogen Era and Heiji Era he followed the Minamoto family but later served the Tairas. When Yoritomo Minamoto rose in arms against the Tairas, he was invited by Yoritomo to join his forces but declined (1180). After Yoritomo became powerful, he Jed his 20,000 mounted warriors to the Sumida River (Edo) to join Yoritomo's camp. Yoritomo reprimanded him for being late.
After the Fuji River campaign (1181), he and other generals dissuaded Yoritomo from marching further westward. He then drove out the Satake family from Hitachi Province (Ibaraki Prefecture) on behalf of Yoritomo. Dissatisfied with the way Yoritomo treated him, Hirotsune spoke ill of him and their relations cooled.
He was suspected of treasonable intensions and was finally killed by Kagetoki Kajiwara, a retainer of Yoritomo. Yoritomo regretted his deathupon learning of his innocence which was revealed in his written prayer to the Ichinomiya Shrine in Kazusa.
